July 2nd

As was the case yesterday, I cut brush first thing in the morning while letting Jack sleep and then returned to camp for breakfast.

We stopped at the Highline area to cut trees that were obstructing the view. Boh gave me free reign to determine which trees to cut and, as I like to do when I cut trees at home, I only cut a few at a time so that I don't cut more than is necessary. The view from the Highline camp is now spectacular, even if I do say so myself.

Jack and I then work around Highbush lake, another area that bears frequent. We did see large male black bear on the way but saw none at the lake.

After finishing our rounds, we dragged the canoe through the muskeg to the Earl West slough. In my opinion, it us the best fresh water paddling on the island. The water is calm and crystal clear and it is as peaceful a setting as you can imagine. I decided not to fish and just enjoy the scenery.

We returned to camp and grilled burgers. I made a fire and finished "Yukon Solo", a book about a Czech engineer who canoes the entire length of the Yukon river in the early 70's in a 17 foot aluminum canoe.

It was a great day.

  1. Ahhhhhh..........what a life you guys are livin'!
    Absolutely beautiful!
That bottom pic is amazing. It's almost the effect of an infinity pool where the water just blends right into the canoe. It's kind of magical - so peaceful - just makes me want to take a nap.
