I knew that Jack had been up most if the night. He said that World War Z was the scariest movie that he'd ever seen and that he was unable to sleep. He was still dead to the world at eight when I was ready to go. I left him a note, set the alarm for ten, and left to cut brush at the Thom's Creek area.
This may have been the nicest day yet this summer. The clear skies were accompanied by cool temps and a light breeze that kept the bugs down. I explored a few remote logging roads on the way down to Thom's. The island is covered by old logging roads. Most are so overgrown by alder the you'd be hard pressed to get through in foot, others are kept open with four wheelers traffic. These roads provide access to country that few would ever get a chance to see. Only those willing to bushwhacked their way through the bush would get a glimpse. A few take you into open clear cuts providing astounding views of the surrounding hills and distant mountains.
The day was uneventful and aside from a few Sitka deer, I saw nothing in the way of wildlife. Sitka deer are puny little things that seem to about the size of a large dog. They seem to be doing well as I've never seen so many fawns.
When I returned to camp, Jack was working in his Japanese homework. The course seems to be challenging for him and is providing plenty of work. He'll probably get through the first semester by the time summer ends.
I made a fire and grilled chicken and corn on the cob for dinner. The head ranger stopped by to ask us to sit his dog again this week. I love that washer and dryer....I mean that dog.
I left my phone at camp with Jack today so I don't have many pictures from the day that are easily loaded. All of the photos from this blog were taken with my iPhone 4S. I do have other cameras but downloading photos is difficult given the unreliability of the connection this far from town. Here are a few pictures from previous weeks.
Hi Smokey/ (I mean Jack),
ReplyDeleteI'm waiting for the review on World War Z.
I saw an ad for it on TV & it looked pretty horrifying!! Besides, I never was a fan of Brad Pitt. I'm glad to hear you're enjoying some beautiful weather. Hope it stays that way 'til your Mom gets up there.
Love, Grandma Helen
