Bob called early to ask the we help the crew move a picnic table to the site at the Anita Bay overlook. I knew that this would be a chore as the overlook is perched on an outcrop of rock at the end of a long section of boardwalk. The tables are constructed of yellow cedar and weigh over 300 pounds when dry - this one had been sitting in the rain for the past week. After winching it over roughly 50 yards of slick, wet boardwalk, we decided to carry it up to the site. It was an unwieldy carry, but we finally were able to wrestle it into place.
Jack and I walked the dog and completed our rounds under a steady downpour.
A group of native Tlingit women gave a presentation on how they use strips of bark from the yellow/red cedars on the island to weave baskets, hats, and other assorted crafts. There was the usual assortment of food, including a duck stew, chocolate covered strawberries, and a brittle that had ginger and seaweed as ingredients. The potluck was very well attended in spite of the rain. There were over thirty people and six dogs in attendance at the potluck's height and it lasted until the noseeums decided to start their own feast. Afterward, Jack and stopped off to put the dog to bed and say goodbye to our temporary refuge.
