Greg -

The weather party's over - the rain started last night and it's progressed from an occasional drizzle to extended deluge.   Jack and I worked the road today - first full day in the backcountry.    At the Anita Bay overlook, we startled a huge porcupine who immediately climbed to safety.  Later in the day at High Bush lake we spotted a set of large bear tracks in the mud - only tracks, no bear.

Several guys from the Rec crew came out to the site early this morning to help me cut down alders which were beginning to block our view of Zimovia Strait.   Glen, the crew leader brought Jack and I a silver salmon that he'd caught over the weekend.   We'll be grilling that tomorrow night - I'll post pictures.

Jack and I will be back at the Ranger District office tomorrow for a radio safety training session just after noon - Jack doesn't know it, but I've also scheduled showers for the both of us - the first in a few days.   Last night, two guys in a truck stopped by to tell me that they'd just passed a bear about fifty yards from our site.   They asked that we not tell their wives as it would mean the end to their camping trip.  I helped them with firewood and off they went.

Jack and I are at the library at the moment - I'm pretty tired but he's been looking forward to this all day.    In addition to training tomorrow, we'll also be going to the pool - Jack is going to workout and I'm planning on a run outside in the rain - can't wait.

  1. If Jack is swimming and you are running in the rain, why do you need showers?

  2. Good question, Janna!

Greg - I guess by now you've heard our latest neighborhood bear story! Could we have another bear story before you have a live sighting? Hope all is dry and warm in AK!
