Greg -

It's raining this morning.   I listened to the forecast on the NOAA station yesterday and the outlook for every day ended with "rain".  You can't have a rain forest without the rain.

Below is a photo taken from a point about a quarter mile from our site on the Nemo Loop road looking north toward Wrangell.

Our friends, Trina, Wayne and Beth joined us to see The Avengers last night.  Jack loves Beth and they really have a good time when they see each other.   Trina and Beth both work at the Anan Observation Station - an area situated at Anan Creek on Etolin Island jointly managed by the USFS and the State of Alaska.   During the salmon run, access to the area is limited to fifty permits each day by the USFS.  This helps manage the number of bear/human interactions.   The USFS maintains a crew of "guides" who check permits and monitor those interactions at an observation platform on Anan creek.   The guides work seven day shifts, during which they stay at the crew floathouse anchored in Anan Bay.  The floathouse has two bunk rooms (one female, one male), a small kitchen and dining area with a table that also serves as a work room, and a small outhouse in the back.   Water for dishes and the toilet is rainwater that is collected in a 300 gallon tank fed by the floathouse gutter system.   Drinking water and food is brought by boat with each crew change.   There is a bank of batteries that supplies electricity.   The batteries are recharges by solar panels and a small gas generator when conditions warrant - and conditions warrant it often.   Jack and I are scheduled to head down with the crew next week to help ready the observation platform for the start of the season (two weeks from now).
